A Shop For Killers Kdrama Review: an excellent action-thriller to watch

    By Ji Sung

A Shop For Killers Korean drama, starring Lee Dong Wook and Kim Hye Jun in the lead roles, is released on Disney+ and it lived up to the anticipation and expectations of the viewers. Here is the full review that you should read.

I absolutely loved watching “A Shop for Killers” on Disney+! It’s like they took all those young adult fantasy books I used to read and brought them to life. The dark anti-hero theme and seeing Jian’s growth made it such an engaging ride for me. The fun fight scenes and distinct characters kept me entertained, although those weird fade-to-black transitions and repeated scenes were a bit off.

As a Disney+ show, it gave me vibes of those young adult novels, where the female lead faces hardships and becomes a force to be reckoned with. Hye Joon did an amazing job playing Jian, and even though she’s not Katniss or Rose Hathaway, I could see that thread of growth and sacrifice that I adore in those novels. The whole mercenary killer theme with high-tech gadgets and Asian actors made it even more enjoyable.

Lee Dong Wook was fantastic as Jian’s uncle and teacher, and Jo Han Sun’s portrayal of the psychopath gave me chills. Despite some cliches, the story felt refreshing. Now, MinHye’s character could have been more convincing in her action scenes – a bit slow and weak, if I’m being honest. But that’s just a small complaint in the grand scheme of things.

The plot’s well-developed, and I loved the way they weaved the future and flashbacks. The fight scenes and weapon technologies were above average, showing Disney’s commitment. Pasin, with his Thai mannerisms, added a unique touch that I appreciated. The super open ending got me excited for a potential second season, and I’m all in if that happens.

The storytelling in this drama was like a puzzle, and I loved how they revealed pieces at their own pace. Lee Dong Wook and the female lead portrayed their characters so well, making me feel connected to the story. The drama dealt with killers, a shop, dark web, and family dynamics – a lot going on, but it worked. The relationship between the uncle and niece was unexpectedly sweet, adding a heartwarming touch.

Sure, I got bored sometimes, but with only 8 episodes, it was easy to overlook. Even during the moments of boredom, I couldn’t bring myself to hit pause because I was still eager to uncover what would happen next. Overall, “A Shop for Killers” is a must-watch, especially if you’re into action-packed dramas like me. It’s a personal favorite of mine.
